‘Rozgar Duniya’ - a new job portal for rural India!!!

The idea of an online employment portal for Indian villagers does not seem quite plausible at first. But if there are two organisations that can make it successful, it had to be Monster.com and ITC’s e-Choupal initiative.Together, they have now launched a bi-lingual (Hindi and English) portal, Rozgar Duniya, to specifically cater to rural job seekers in India. Job categories include textiles and weaving, teaching, mechanic and auto repair, data entry and industrial jobs such as motor binding, steel fabrication, glass blowing and administration jobs.

HOW WOULD VILLAGERS ACCESS IT??
The biggest obstacle, obviously, is in getting the technologically backward and often illiterate farmers and other villagers to participate. This is where e-Choupal comes in.

These e-Choupals are Internet kiosks in villages that offer farmers crop, weather and market information. Overall, there are 6,500 such kiosks in 10 states so far, reaching four million villagers.

ITC will be training its e-Choupal Sanchalaks, farmers who were trained to operate the kiosks, to help others in their community use the website and apply for jobs. The two companies are initially targeting four states – Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan – but will scale it up to nine states and about 40,000 villages over time.

ITC and Monster.com have entered into a revenue sharing agreement, details of which were not disclosed by the companies. No mention is made of the monetary benefit that gets passed down to the e-Choupal Sanchalak.

Sony releases its first NETBOOK in INDIA!!!

Sony has released its first 'netbook' (no, we were not supposed to call the Vaio P pocket series by that name) in the Indian market, the Vaio W series.

The model features an isolated keyboard with springy and responsive keys making it comfortable and easy to use. Its carefully designed touchpad and mouse keys make the PC functional and mouse movements easy to control. The Vaio W model comes in three vibrant colors- pink, white and brown. A more subtle shade of the exterior hue finishes the inside of the PC while the touchpad is lined with a splash of brightness.

The Vaio W also features a 10.1-inch LED-backlit display with a native resolution of 1366x768 pixels –a widescreen format that lets you view full-width web pages without side-scrolling.

Fitted with a 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM, Sony has thankfully gone with Windows XP as the operating system of choice, eschewing Vista.

With the Vaio W, fun comes standard. Built into every model is Vaio Multimedia Suite, a collection of video and photo editing tools that make it easy to create your own high-quality home movies, slideshows and more, no matter where you are. Of course the Vaio W features built-in Wi-Fi for a fast connection to internet hot spots and your home network. But it also keeps you plugged into your favorite media. With Vaio Media Plus, you can stream photos, videos and music from the Vaio W and enjoy it all through your PS3 on your compatible TV.

Easily transfer data, such as photos from your digital camera or music from an MP3 player, to and from the PC with the unit’s two convenient USB ports. Incorporated Bluetooth technology enables peripherals such as a wireless mouse to be utilised without tying up the unit’s ports. A built-in Webcam and microphone let you video chat with family, friends and colleagues.

The Vaio W Series mini notebook will retail for Rs. 29,990 at all Sony Center stores and retail partners across the country.

Digit's Review for you Readers:
--------------------------------
The raw power of the machine was demonstrated through everybody’s favourite benchmark game, Crysis Warhead. With maxed-out graphics settings and anti-aliasing set to 4x, there was no visible performance issue whatsoever.

Now, keep in mind that this is meant to be a desktop replacement and not a laptop that touts its portability, since it weighs in a solid 5.3kgs. The aluminium casing was a treat to hold, though, and the backlit keyboard blew us away. We usually spend a lot of hours playing in complete darkness, so the ability to see the keys is a boon indeed.

What’s more, not only can you customise all the lighting of the keyboard, Alienware tweaks the slightest hint of any LED light to such an extent that each application can result in a custom light theme.

The keyboard is divided into different sections and also sports a numpad, allowing for a cool transition effect of different coloured lights.

Flush with dual front speakers, the device sports a 17-inch screen with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, and supports processors ranging from the Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (2.4GHz) to the Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9300 (2.53GHz). The M17x is powered by a 1GBDDR3 Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 graphics card, which can be dialled up all the way to dual 1GB GeForce GTX 280 graphics cards using SLI technology. How’s that for graphics power? WOW!!!!

Running on Windows Vista, the laptop can be fitted with 4GB, 6GB or 8GB of DDR3 RAM, while storage is restricted to a hard disk of up to 500GB or an SSD of up to 256GB.

Equipped with either a slot-loading DVD burner or a Blu-Ray combo, it comes with almost all the connectivity options you could think of: 4 USB ports, eSATA, HDMI, D-Sub, ExpressCard, Gigabit Ethernet, 3.5mm audio jack, microphone port, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 8-in-1 media card reader, and can even support a TV tuner.

Aug 6th, 2009 - Twitter, Facebook go down!!!

August 6th 2009, saw a real-life recreation of the scene from The Truman Show, where once the plug is pulled on the show, people search about aimlessly for something else to do – a commentary on how television has taken over our lives. Only this time, TV was replaced by social networking site Facebook and micro-blogging service Twitter, as both sites crashed after a malicious attack.

The attack came so suddenly that Twitter did not even have time to put up its "fail whale" error image. Co-founder Biz Stone said on the site’s blog that they were the victim of a denial-of-service attack, a technique in which hackers overwhelm a website's servers with communications requests.

"We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate" Stone wrote.

Facebook too faced a similar attack, with a spokesperson saying: "Earlier this morning, Facebook encountered network issues related to an apparent distributed denial of service attack, that resulted in degraded service for some users. No user data was at risk and we have restored full access to the site for most users."

A similar attack – expected to be orchestrated by the same hackers – also took down blogging service LiveJournal.

All three services are now back to full functionality, but the impact it had on its audience spoke a lot about how dependant the world has gotten on them.

As Monica Hesse of the Washington Post puts it: "It was almost like social networking had died. Or had a heart attack, at least. For several hours, millions of users were catapulted back to the dark, informationless days of 2003, before such pertinent information as what Ashton Kutcher had for a snack became readily available, before it was possible for people to take a simple quiz to learn which ‘Twilight’ character or dog breed they were most like."

Anand Chandrasekaran, a serial entrepreneur in Mountain View, California, said he felt "completely cut off" from hundreds of friends without Twitter.

"Director John Hughes died today and I didn't know because Twitter was down," a user called kristenthomson tweeted shortly after the site was functioning again. "Do I have to go back to watching the news to get my news?"
