Ensure that you dont have lot of programs on startup and also see that they dont keep running in the background.
- Go to Start | Run and type "msconfig" and press Enter
- Try removing unnecessary items from the "startup" section. Go to the "Services" tab, check the "Hide all microsoft services" and disable the ones that you dont need running in the background.
Overclocking the CPU might also help - but not advisable by many. Only games may be very slighlty improved by performance but not applications.
